Federal and California Tax Matters

  • IRS and Franchise Tax Board correspondence
  • Income-matching and proposed-adjustment notices
  • Penalty, balance-due and filing-status issues
  • Correspondence examinations and document requests
  • Unfiled returns or prior responses that did not resolve the matter

Review, Response and Representation

The first step is to identify what the agency changed or requested, the applicable deadline, and the procedural stage of the matter. The relevant returns, account history and supporting records are then reviewed before a response is prepared.

When covered by the engagement and supported by the appropriate authorization, assistance may include written responses, supporting-document submissions and communication with the IRS or FTB.

Deadlines and Supporting Records

Tax notices often provide a limited period to respond, appeal or request review. An initial inquiry should identify the agency, tax year, notice date and response deadline so the matter can be evaluated promptly.

Some matters require a tax attorney, valuation specialist or another professional. If that becomes apparent during review, the limitation will be identified rather than extending the engagement beyond its appropriate scope.
